South King Fire and Rescue proudly serves the community members of Federal Way, Des Moines and a portion of unincorporated King County, Washington. The fire district covers nearly 41 square miles and protects nearly 150,000 citizens. The district is made up of what used to be five former fire districts and is governed by five elected Board of Fire Commissioners. The District is led by Fire Chief Victor L. Pennington who was appointed effective January 1, 2020.
South King Fire offers a wide variety of on the job training and career advancement opportunities to employees that benefit the community. After completing JATC training, Firefighters can test to become Driver Engineers or serve on Special Teams that focus on Technical Rescue, Marine Rescue and responding to Hazardous Material related incidents. Firefighters may also qualify to become acting officers which help prepare them for testing opportunities to become permanent grade Lieutenants and Captains. Other career paths are available in Fire Prevention, Community Affairs, Training and Logistics.
